Designed for vocalists, Gigspeak! is a workshop created to provide the communication tools and techniques to effectively lead the musicians who accompany you. I am a veteran of over 40 years of professional band leading as a vocalist and pianist, performing in restaurants, night clubs, shows and private events in Los Angeles and Portland. I'm anxious to share what I've gleaned during my career!
(Please check out the Musician page of this website to see my music bio.)
At the end of the the workshop, you will feel newly empowered to lead your back-up band with precision and confidence!
Subjects will include (but not be limited to):
Essential music terminology
Demystifying music theory basics
Song structure
Time signatures, tempos and “feels”
Intros, "turnarounds" and endings
Counting off tunes… the right way
Choosing the best key for you and your accompanying musicians
The importance of easy-to-read musical charts and their elements
And much more… including many tricks of the trade I have gathered over the years!
The workshop consists of three sessions, the first two at my home in the Ladd’s Addition neighborhood of SE Portland and the third at a local jam session.
The first session will explore in detail the rules and tools necessary for effective back-up band leading. Handouts full of helpful info will be provided and musical examples given.
The second session: workshop participants will be asked to bring two tunes they plan to perform at the upcoming jam. We’ll put on a test performance and explore how what you’ve learned can be applied to your song selections. Not only will this be a warm-up for the jam, but a first chance to utilize the rules and tools presented in the first session.
The third session: at a local jam session, participants will be sitting in with some of Portland's finest musicians
and leading the back-up band!
Workshop dates: First session - Saturday, August 3 Second session - Saturday, August 10 Jam session date TBD
Workshop fee: $95
Class size is limited to 5 students, so don't delay!
